1998 Free The South Kensington 3, a poster campaign with Richard Hamilton
Jan recalls: ‘This poster campaign ‘Free The South Kensington 3’ was a battle cry for the continued freedom of the Natural History Museum, Science Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, after entrance charges were threatened by New Labour. Richard Hamilton told me about his constant drawing trips to the Science Museum as a boy, and how this would have been impossible with charges in place. The campaign, a ‘holy’ alliance of the BECTU visual artists branch, The National Campaign for the Arts, Lords, Ladies, Artists, National Arts Collections Fund, ENGAGE, VAGA, MPs and Trade Unions, eventually won – and plans for charging were scrapped. In this poster, Raphael looks forlornly through his bars at the V&A. Richard designed three posters, the other two show the imprisoning of Charles Darwin at the Natural History Museum and Ada Lovelace (the inventor of the computer) at the Science Museum. This triptych was held aloft at a demonstration outside the V&A on Museums Day May 1998 – with the posters taken into the permanent collection. They were also recently exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery.’
